Girls International Three-Minute Science Competition

2023 competition now opened!

LET'S GET GIRLS INTO SCIENCE.

Stereotype threat and implicit bias are two key reasons why women are underrepresented in science. The problem is self-reinforcing: the less gender-inclusive the scientific community, the more science becomes male-dominated and the more those stereotypes become reinforced.

We are inviting all female-identifying teenagers from any part of the world to participate in the Girls International Three-Minute Science Competition, free of charge. Whether you're avidly passionate about science or just dipping your toe in the water, we'd love for you to join us!

LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT HERE

In 2020, we received over 300 submissions from 21 countries and 6 continents, a testament to the strength of the scientific spirit in girls all around the world. Keep updated by signing up for the mailing list below!

ELIGIBILITY

If you identify as female or non-binary and are between 12 to 19 years old, you are eligible to compete! We welcome participants from all countries around the world.

Previous winning submissions

Our judges are professors from the world's top universities.

Vicki L. Colvin

Brown University

Dr. Colvin teaches chemistry, engineering, molecular pharmacology, physiology, and biotechnology. She is the director of Brown's Center for Biomedical Engineering. Her research focuses on inorganic chemistry and nano and materials chemistry.

Zahra Fakhraai

University of Pennsylvania

Dr. Fakhraai is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research studies the effect of nano-confinement on structure, dynamics, and other properties of materials to apply such phenomena in producing novel tools.

Diana Fusco

University of Cambridge

Dr. Fusco is a University Lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge. Her research explores evolution using an interdisciplinary approach rooted in experimental microbiology, statistical physics, and population genetics.

Ruilan Guo

University of Notre Dame

Dr. Guo is an Associate Professor of Engineering at Notre Dame. Her research focuses on chemical engineering of functional polymer and polymer-based membrane materials with applications in areas impacting both energy and the environment.

Rebecca Heald

University of California, Berkeley

Dr. Heald is a professor of Cell and Developmental Biology. Her research studies the size control of intracellular structures as well as cell division, specifically the mitotic spindle that is responsible for the correct distribution of chromosomes to each daughter cell.

Meredith Kelly

Dartmouth University

Dr. Kelly is an Associate Professor of Earth Science at Dartmouth University. Her research centers upon advancing the knowledge of the terrestrial record of past climate change to better understand modern climate and mechanisms of climate change.

Hilke Schlichting

University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Schlichting is an Associate Professor in Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences and in Physics and Astronomy. She holds a visiting faculty appointment at MIT in EAPS and Physics. Her research focuses on astrophysics and planetary sciences.

Jessica Zhang

Carnegie Mellon University

Dr. Zhang is the George Tallman Ladd and Florence Barrett Ladd Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon. Her research interests include image processing, computational geometry, finite element method, isogeometric analysis, data-driven simulation, and their applications.
